The Burt Award for African Literature PDF Print E-mail

The Burt Award for African Literature is a newly created award that honours and supports the writing and publication of excellent young adult literature by and for Africans. The programme recognises outstanding authors and ensures publication of their work by local publishers.

The Award is sponsored by CODE, a Canadian NGO, with generous support from Canadian patron Bill Burt.

Three awards will be presented annually:

Gold, GH¢16,000
Silver GH¢ 8,000
Bronze GH¢4,000

Prizes are based on $12,000, $6,000 and $3,000 Canadian dollars and are subject to changes in currency exchange rates.

Winning authors will be awarded monetary prizes and will work with local publishers to ensure 3,000 published copies are distributed by GBT to schools in rural areas of Ghana. The announcement of the first Burt Award will coincide with the Ghana  International Book Fair to be held in November 2010.

ADMINISTRATION
The Ghana Book Trust (GBT), supported by CODE, is the implementing organisation that will manage the award. The Award will be given to titles that are of excellent quality, reflect a common experience but offer original perspectives and appeal to young African readers.
